Steam Tag FAQs
Q: How should I tag my Steam indie game?
In general, you should start with your game's main genre(s), and work your way through any unique features, characteristics, or qualities that make your game interesting. You can benefit from using the analysis and optimisation tool above to research market competitors' tags and summarise the most applicable ones for your game. Following this, you should use Steam's Tag Wizard to add your tags and aim to get the most suitable similar games in the 'more like this' section displayed there. Lastly, you should review your tags before every big communication event (e.g. announcement, launch, dlc) and then every 3 - 6 months. If you don't find the audience you're looking for, start over and try a new approach!
Q: Is there a full Steam tag list?
Yes, you can find a full list of Steam tags on SteamDB. This also shows the number of games that use each tag, which is useful for understanding how influencial or niche a tag is.
Q: How many tags can you add to a Steam game?
You can add as many tags as you like to your game, but only 20 tags will show – it's best to limit to 15 and leave 5 for the player community to add. The order of the tags is important with the first tags given the most weight in the recommendation engine. Only the first 5 tags are displayed under the capsule on the game's store page.
Q: Are there any Steam tags I should avoid for my game?
Not necessarily, but you should be aware of putting generic tags at the top of your tag list like 'indie' – or broad tags like 'action', 'adventure' or 'casual' – if there are more appropriate specific tags instead. Additionally, tags like 'interactive fiction', 'character action game' and others and have very specific meanings and are not appropriate for most games – do the research for all tags you include, especially for any you're unsure of.
