🤖 Coverage Bot - Setup Guide
Thanks for signing up for IMPRESS and for your interest in Coverage Bot.
This is a simple 3-step guide for setting up your game on IMPRESS/Coverage Bot and for enabling interactivity and moderation in your Discord Server.
Note: Here’s a Video Walkthrough. If you would like a personal setup walkthrough, please book a demonstration.
After registering with email or Discord, setting your password, and confirming your email address, you will have an account to login with.
If you are the first user at your company, you will need to create a ‘company’ to create subscriptions with and add games to. If you are joining an existing company, you will need to reach out to support as this is presently not supported in the interface.
Next you will need to add a valid Coverage Bot subscription. Subscriptions are processed by Stripe, the leading internet payments platform.
Select your local currency, desired subscription length and access tier, and input your card details for payment. Once you are through this flow, you will be able to add game projects.
To add your first game, search for your game name using the field provided.
If your game does not show up, you will need to make sure it is added on the global database of games, IGDB. If your game is not yet publicly announced, you can contact support and we will add it manually.
Be sure to add all game-specific websites/urls - the more detail the better!
Coverage Bot searches YouTube, Twitch and trusted Web Publications to find your game’s coverage. When doing so, it looks for your game name, website urls and keywords.
When specifying keywords, you don’t need to include the game name or web urls again; you should only include simple hashtags, alternative game names and other terms to specifically search for.
Without any restrictions, Coverage Bot is likely to find some coverage items that are not correct - these are known as “false positives”.
To limit these results, you should define a healthy list of Blocked Words. If an article/video includes any of the blocked words, it will be instantly rejected. It’s good practice to search for your game name on the web and YouTube, to see what these false positives might look like.
As an example, if your game is called ”Warborn”, you’ll find Swedish politician Jörgen Warborn, a World of Warcraft guild, a game named Avadon 3, as well as Michigan-based death metal band Black Dahlia Murder. Fantastic - but not what the developer is looking for or wants to see!
So here are the blocked words for Warborn.
Be as thorough as possible - this keeps the false positives to a minimum - and update them regularly if new false positive results slip through over time.
By default, Coverage Bot looks at pre-approved gaming websites and influencer channels. You can configure Coverage Bot to search outside of this list and collect additional coverage items for your approval queue. Just tick all the boxes to “Track Potentials”.
By default, Coverage Bot will collect data from any channel/website with 0 or more subscribers. You can change this value if you are not interested in coverage from channels with small audiences.
You will need to enable Web tracking, YouTube tracking and Twitch tracking separately after setting up the keywords and configuring other settings. Your game’s overview page should show state of your installation.
(Note: While you can use Coverage Bot without Discord integration, and approve/reject items using the IMPRESS dashboard, it’s nicer to use your tools where your community is!)
Head to the Settings - Linked Accounts page and follow the form through to connecting your account and returning to the IMPRESS Dashboard. Upon refresh the page should say that your Discord account is connected.
Head to your game’s Discord Settings page and select the server you’d like to connect to this game.
Once connected, you should see the bot in the server’s member list. Send a /init
command to start the setup process - it will create a new channel (#coverage-moderation
) and a new role (Coverage Bot (Moderator)
) which you should give to yourself to view the moderation channel.
If you do not see the channel or role, you will need to go into your server’s Roles settings, and move the Coverage Bot closer to the top of the list. You will also need to make sure you have adequate moderation settings and 2FA enabled on your account and server. Send another /init
to prompt the bot to try again.
Lastly on this, send a /pending
message in the #coverage-moderation
channel to prompt the bot to list coverage. If you get an error, see the FAQ & Troubleshooting guide, and if you see coverage or an empty list, consider that successful and then the next step is your last.
Adding a webhook enables IMPRESS to post your approved coverage to Slack or an extra Discord server besides the one the bot joined. See this guide for how to add a webhook to a channel in your server (we recommend creating a channel just for coverage posts). Once your webhook is added to your channel, and also saved to your game’s settings in the dashboard, you’re all set and good to go!
Just a word of warning: though Coverage Bot searches the web regularly to find your coverage, it can take up to an hour to build the first report. Do not be alarmed if nothing appears straight away, it’s all part of the process. Your game’s overview page shows the installation state, and if everything is set up and ready it will communicate this.
If you are having trouble getting set up with Coverage Bot, please see the FAQ & Troubleshooting guide. Lastly, to see what functions are available through Discord, visit the full list of Coverage Bot’s Discord Commands.
